What is Frank working on?

A concert presentation of Mitsuko and Frank Wildhorn & Friends will take place in Japan this March. Performances are planned for 11-14 March at Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo, and on 18-21 March at Umeda Arts Theater in Osaka. Act One will be a concert presentation of material from Frank's new musical Mitsuko. Kei Aran and Mate Kamaras will sing the parts of Mitsuko and Heinrich, respectively. The part of Richard will be performed by Yoshio Inoue in Tokyo, and by Lukas Perman (20th March) and Mario Tashiro (other dates) in Osaka. Act Two will be a presentation of the Frank Wildhorn & Friends concert. In addition to the above listed performers and Frank himself taking the stage during this half of the program, other performers that have been mentioned include Marcia, Takeshi Kaga (the 11th, 12th, evening performance on the 20th, and the 21st) and Rena Sasamoto (13th March only). All appearances are subject to change. The concert is directed by Shuichiro Koike, and presented by Asahi, Umeda Arts Theater and Kyodo Tokyo. Wonderland logo The world premiere staging of Wonderland: Alice's New Musical Adventure is now playing at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas. This run of the show takes place on the Hubbard Stage from 15 January through 14 February 2010, with an opening night of 20 January. Performance times are Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7:30, Fridays at 8, Saturdays at 2:30 and 8 and Sundays at 2:30 and 7:30. The show ran at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts (previously called the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center) in Tampa, Florida from 24 November 2009 through 3 January 2010, with an official opening of 5 December. The cast is led by Julie Brooks as Chloe, Janet Dacal as Alice Cornwinkle, Jose Llana as Hector/El Gato, Karen Mason as Mrs. Everheart/The Queen of Hearts, Darren Ritchie as Jack/The White Knight, Nikki Snelson as Madeline/The Mad Hatter, Ed Staudenmayer as Richard/The Rabbit and Tommar Wilson as Theo/The Caterpillar. Photos from the first day of rehearsals have been added to the Project Photo Gallery. A concept recording of Wonderland has just been released. New sound clips will be posted each week on wonderlandthemusical.org. It is available from the Straz Center's store - online or by calling 813-222-1029 - and from Sound of Music and Dress Circle. The Count of Monte Cristo CD Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy's The Count of Monte Cristo had its world premiere on 14 March 2009 at Theater St. Gallen in Switzerland. The show, which is performed in German, is now playing its second season through 5 April 2010. A third season of performances has been announced, with performances currently planned between 9 October and 30 December 2010. Tickets are available through the Theater St. Gallen website. Two related videos have been posted at art-tv.ch (in German).

A German-language cast recording - featuring the cast from the St. Gallen production - has just been released. The album is currently available from Sound of Music, Amazon.de and iTunes (US, Germany, Austria or Switzerland). The song list matches that of the concept recording, including: Prolog; Ein Leben lang; Geschichte; Niemals allein; Jeden Tag ein kleiner Tod; Wie mich die Welt umarmt; Könige; Hölle auf Erden; Ah, Frauen; Diese Augen/Der Mann ist tot; Schöner Schein; All die Zeit; Der Mann, der ich einst war. A Korean production of the show will be presented at the Universal Arts Center in Seoul, South Korea, from 22 April through 13 June 2010. Information can be found at musicalmonte.com and at the Universal Arts Center website.

Carmen Performances of Carmen will resume at the Karlín Musical Theater in Prague, Czech Republic on 24 February, with dates announced through 12 June 2010. Shows take place on Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7 PM, with Saturday matinees at 3 PM. Tickets are available by calling +420 221 868 777 or online. BroadwayWorld.com reported last season that the show has become the most successful production in Czech theater history, with unprecedented ticket sales. A cast recording is currently available. Bonnie & Clyde The world premiere production of Bonnie & Clyde was just honored with several awards at the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle's 2009 Craig Noel Awards for Theatrical Excellence. The show was named the year's "Outstanding New Musical" and other honors went to Jeff Calhoun for his direction, John McDaniel for musical direction, and Laura Osnes and Melissa van der Schyff as leading and featured musical performers. The production took place at La Jolla Playhouse's Mandell Weiss Theatre in La Jolla, California, beginning previews on 10 November 2009, officially opening on 22 November and running through 20 December. The cast was led by Laura Osnes as Bonnie, Stark Sands as Clyde, Mare Winningham as Bonnie's mother Emma, Melissa van der Schyff as Clyde's sister-in-law Blanche, Wayne Duvall as the Sheriff, Claybourne Elder as Clyde's brother Buck and Chris Peluso as Deputy Ted Hinton. The show has music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Don Black, a book by Ivan Menchell, direction by Jeff Calhoun and music direction by John McDaniel. Frank has written a new song for the musical Tale of Two Cities (created by Jill Santoriello), which will be included in a televised concert version of the show beginning Thanksgiving Day on PBS. The new song, titled "Never Say Goodbye", was written specifically for this performance and is not related to Frank's show of the same name. The song has lyrics by Santoriello and is performed by Brandi Burkhardt (in the role of Lucie Manette). A clip of the number can be seen in a promotional video at Broadway.com (just after the 5 minute mark). As reported by Playbill.com and BroadwayWorld.com, the concert staging of Tale of Two Cities was taped from the stage of Theater Royal in Brighton, England in June 2009. It will air on PBS stations throughout the US beginning on Thursday, 26 November (check your local listings for dates and times). The program is expected to be distributed internationally in 2010. Plans are also in the works to release a DVD and international studio cast recording containing additional material. The concert cast includes James Barbour, Natalie Toro, Kevin Earley, J. Mark McVey, Ed Dixon, Rosemary Leach, Simon Thomas, Paul Baker and Michael York serving as narrator. More information about the show can be found at talemusical.com.

An industry reading was held on 11 September for the new musical Tears From Heaven, with music by Frank Wildhorn, a book by Phoebe Hwang and lyrics by Robin Lerner. The show is being produced by Creative Production and Seol & Company, and will debut in Seoul in 2010. The cast for the reading was led by Deborah Lew, Paolo Montalban and John Cudia, under the direction of Gabriel Barre and the musical direction of Adrian Werum. Performing rights for Dracula, The Musical have just been released by Music Theatre International. Stagings will be listed on the Dracula productions page as they are announced. Rudolf

Rudolf Compelte Cast Recording A complete cast recording of the show has been released. This 2-CD set includes a booklet with a photo gallery from the production, and is available from VBW, Amazon.de and Sound of Music.

The second season of performances for Rudolf - Affaire Mayerling recently finished at the Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria. The show played there from 26 February through 4 July 2009, and from 10 September 2009 through 24 January 2010. The show was voted the "best new production of 2009" by readers of the German "Musicals" magazine. Top honors were also given to leading man Drew Sarich, director David Leveaux, choreographer John O'Connell, and designers Mike Britton and Laura Hopkins. The cast recording was voted "best musical CD of 2009". The voting results have been posted at kultur-channel.at.

Rudolf DVD A complete DVD recording of the show is now available. The video, produced by MG-Sound and MWB, includes the full show recorded by a six camera crew, live from the stage of the Raimund Theater. Note: the initial release of the DVD was delayed due to technical issues, which have been corrected. As previously planned, the initial release does not have English subtitles. It does include a printed synopsis of the show, in both German and English. The disc is regionless, but in PAL format. It is currently available for purchase from VBW, Sound of Music, Musical-Shop.de or Amazon.de.

The first cast recording from the Viennese production and a karaoke/sing-along CD are both currently available. The cast recording spent seven weeks on the Austrian Top Albums chart, debuting at number 17, and has now reached double platinum status. Jekyll & Hyde

Australasian Tour TML Enterprises (based in Melbourne, Australia) and True Company (based in Korea) are co-producing an Australasian Tour of Jekyll & Hyde. The tour ran in South Korea from August through November of 2009, and is hoped to play in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. New tour plans will be posted as they are announced. Brad Little leads the cast as Jekyll/Hyde, with Lucy Maunder as Emma, Belinda Wollaston as Lucy, Juan Jackson as Utterson and Barry Langrishe as Sir Danvers. German Tour Logo A German tour of the show has just been announced, presented by Konzertdirektion Landgraf. Performances are expected to begin in December 2010, and run at least through February 2011. The show will be directed by Andreas Gergen and Christian Struppeck (who are helming the show in Magdeburg), with music direction by Heiko Lippmann. According to the Alte Oper website, Yngve Gasoy Romdal (from the Cologne and Magdeburg productions) is expected in the title roles, and Leah Delos Santos (from the Bremen and Magdeburg stagings) will play Lisa. Casting and further details have yet to be officially announced.

The Scarlet Pimpernel

Takarazuka Revue - the famous, all-female theater company based in Takarazuka, Japan - is presenting their second production of Pimpernel, this time performed by Moon Troupe at the Takarazuka Grand Theater in Takarazuka, 16 April - 17 May 2010 and at the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater in Tokyo, 4 June - 4 July 2010. Hiromu Kiriya will lead the cast as Percy with Yuki Aono as Marguerite. Masaki Ryuu and Rio Asumi will alternate in the roles of Chauvelin and Armand. Shuichiro Koike will direct. Two new stagings of the show have been announced in Germany. Stadttheater Bremerhaven is currently presenting Pimpernel at their Großes Haus (Large House) in Bremerhaven, through 2 April 2010. The cast is led by Hans Neblung as Percy, Maike Switzer as Marguerite and Ralph Ertel as Chauvelin, under the musical direction of Peter Stolle, with direction and choreography by Thorsten Krafft. Theater Bielefeld will present the show in Bielefeld, 6 March - 22 April 2010. That staging will have musical direction by William Ward Murta, direction by Roland Hüve and choreography by Jochen Schmidtke. More information is available on the Pimpernel productions page.

The Civil War / For The Glory

The Olympia Choral Society will present a concert of The Civil War in Olympia, Washington, 16-18 April 2010. These concerts are free, there is no reserved seating. For more information see the Olympia Choral Society website.

Appleseed Productions will present The Civil War on the Atonement Stage in Syracuse, New York, 21-23 May 2010. Tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for seniors and students, and can be purchased online. Visit the Appleseed Productions website for more information.

Victor/Victoria

Victor/Victoria will be presented at the Stockerau Open Air Festival near Vienna, Austria. The show premieres on 6 July, and then runs from 13 July through 14 August 2010. Maya Hakvoort and Alfons Haider lead the cast as Victoria and Toddy. More information is available on the Stockerau Open Air Festival website.

The Asian premiere of Victor/Victoria just took place at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore, 9-29 November 2009. Internationally renowned jazz singer Laura Fygi starred in the title roles. More information can be found on the official production website.
